Reducing waste

Reduce, reuse & recycle

Everybody knows these 3 R’s and we all try to do our bit. So why when it comes to floristry do people choose to use single use plastics or throw away stuff and start again? Some may argue it’s easier or cheaper to use single use plastics but I think this is just a habit, we are all so used to living this way and we don’t always see how easy it is to reuse products or choose compostable & recyclable products instead.

Examples where I reduce, reuse & recycle:

Reduce

  • no cellophane wrapping on bouquets

  • no cable ties used in securing installations

  • no single use plastic containers for any designs

  • no floral foam for any designs

  • no plastic packaging on British flowers

  • not using chemically preserved or dyed flowers which contain micro plastics

  • hybrid vehicle used for travelling

Reuse

  • water tubes & containers for water that can be reused for installations and avoid floral foam

  • reusable, robust containers for table designs

  • reusable buckets for collecting British flowers from the growers

Recycle

  • bouquets delivered in cardboard boxes and dressed with tissue paper- recyclable/compostable

  • using twine to secure installation- natural product that is compostable

  • I compost all the flowers I collect after the wedding/event

As part of my wedding quote I have an equipment deposit. This is to ensure clients bring all the containers back and therefore help towards reducing waste. By returning the containers it means I can use them again and again and allows me to invest in a more luxurious, higher quality product.

I hope this has helped to show you how I reduce waste and become more sustainable.
